Energy-Saving and Global Environmental Protection |
| |
Our Sasebo Shipyard consumes the energy (electricity and fuel) equivalent of about 16,400 kiloliters of crude oil a year for activities such as shipbuilding, ship repair, and machinery production. And the shipyard annually generates about 27,800 tons of greenhouse gas (CO2) associated with this energy consumption (FY2010 results).
The Sasebo Shipyard submits its energy-reduction plan, energy consumption figures, and results of CO2 emissions to the Kyushu Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry, as a Type 1 Designated Energy Management Factory. It makes comprehensive efforts to save energy and reduce CO2 emissions, with the target of reducing per unit energy consumption (energy use per production quantity) by more than 1% every year. |

Energy Resources |
| |
The Sasebo Shipyard consumes many resources in its production activities, including steel products, welding materials, paint, carbon dioxide for welding, water, plastic, paper, and others such as wood, which is a renewable natural resource, as well as electricity and fuel.
Our shipyard has stepped up all-encompassing conservation programs to save and use our limited global resources effectively. These include minimizing use of water, materials, expanded use of electronic media and double-sided printing and copying, and elimination of carbon dioxide leaks. |

Green Purchasing |
| |
The Sasebo Shipyard focuses on green purchasing of environment-friendly equipment and materials to minimize the burden we put on the environment.
We use recycled paper for business cards, and so on, and use eco office products such as file folders. What’s more, we changed from conventional rubber balloons in ship christening and delivery ceremonies, to environment-friendly products – another small way to help protect the marine environment and ecosystem. |

| ◆About “eco balloons” |
| Sasebo Heavy Industries uses the following environment-friendly balloons in launching ceremonies for large merchant vessels. |
| |
* Ecology Mama Balloon |
| |
Environment-friendly balloons made of material that breaks down when exposed to carbon dioxide, water, and ultraviolet rays.
They are made of a biodegradable plastic called QualitePrix and dissolve completely after floating into the sky.
| |
* Quolatex balloons |
| |
These are made of 100% natural rubber, and break down naturally after use and return to the soil. |

Reducing Waste, Enhancing Recycling |
| |
Production at the Sasebo Shipyard generates scrap materials such as steel and welding electrodes, waste plastics, used packaging materials, and waste paper. We collect and separate these materials and promote resource recycling.
Specifically, we separate waste paper into six types, encouraging a zero-waste goal in the office. On the work site, we reduce trash by separating scrap and waste in order to boost our recycling percentage. |

Eliminating dust and paint overspray, noise reduction |
| |
Dust and paint mist are generated during sandblasting and coating operations. We place protective screens around these work sites to contain dust and paint mist, and install wind vanes to help us minimize the spread of these pollutants by wind.
Compressors, air blowers, pressing machines, and other production equipment and machinery generate noise. We do our best to minimize this by installing sound insulating walls and other soundproofing equipment. |

Prevention of marine pollution |
| |
The Sasebo Shipyard is on the coast, so we must deal with the risk of marine oil spills during, dockside operations. We prepare for unexpected incidents such as oil spills and set guidelines for spill prevention as well as emergency response and management. We provide oil booms, oil dispersant, and emulsifying agent, and test emergency response procedures through periodic training. Our goal is to reduce the risk of spills and minimize marine pollution when spills do occur. |
